Teays Valley: A Transition Season with Strong Ambitions

School Name: Teays Valley High School

Conference Name: COHSBC (Central Ohio High School Bowling Conference) / MSL (Mid-State League)

Coach Name: Nick Bolyard

Transition and Ambition

Teays Valley High School is on the cusp of a significant transition. They have been unofficially competing in the OCC (Ohio Capital Conference) for the past three seasons and officially move next year. This transition has already made the team stronger. Competing in the OCC Buckeye division has exposed them to rigorous competition, requiring adjustments shot for shot. This change in mentality and work ethic has been a driving force for the team's off-season preparation.

Key Athletes

Teays Valley looks to their key athletes to make a significant impact this season. Jullian Cunningham (180.9 average last season), Zavier Gest (195.5), Jace Orris, and Sam Rodgers (175.5) anchor the boys in the transition year. The Teas Valley girls will look to Loralai Kinzy (149.3), Kenna Barnes (150.8), and Gretchen Stachler (131.8).

Team Goals and Challenges

The boys' team aims to sustain their recent success. They've had a strong program over the last couple of years but need to avoid complacency. With new faces in new positions, they are looking for young talent to step up.

The girls' team has faced challenges on paper over the last three seasons. Last year marked a hard reset with a lineup dominated by young faces. This year, with only one senior in the mix, they are enthusiastic about their young team. The focus remains on improving fundamentals and spare shooting.

Tough Competition and Measuring Stick

Teays Valley recognizes the toughness of the OCC. They consider themselves fortunate to be part of the new OCC Buckeye, which their school will officially join next year. They will host the Thanksgiving Shootout on November 18, providing a valuable measuring stick early in the season.

Team Culture and Support

Teays Valley's bowling program emphasizes a strong team culture based on the acronym "FAMILY" (Forget About Me, I Love You). They instill selflessness, teach love for one another (LEO), and emphasize attention to detail, focusing on aspects they can control rather than scores or championships.

The program enjoys tremendous support from their booster club, parents, administration, teachers, and the community.

Community Engagement

Teays Valley's bowling program actively engages with the community. They participated in the PBA60 and organized a reading event at a local elementary school. Their Mini Golf Outing and Kickoff event in the offseason were aimed at involving the community, with kudos to the kids, coaches, and the booster club for their efforts.

Growing Program and Unified Department

The program has approximately 40 players this year, potentially forming up to 6 teams at one time, making it a significantly large program. Their weight room numbers have never been higher, and the integration of their program into the athletic department's lifting regimen has created a unified department.

Pride in Excellence

Teays Valley takes pride in their athletes' performance both in the classroom and on the lanes. They emphasize having some of the best individuals in the Teays Valley community.

Acknowledgment is also given to their dedicated coaches, supportive booster board, administration, AD Aaron Woollard, and the staff at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl, who all contribute to the program's success.
